So, I know I’ve been snoozing on updating the blog. My apologies! I
just threw a bunch of listings up on the “upcoming shows” page,
including a kick-ass Valentine’s Day variety show happening tomorrow
night at Firehouse 13.

Why this is a burlesque-related issue:
1. The burlesque revival would not exist if not for the GLBT community, who kept the tradition of bawdy variety alive in drag revues (which, until the eighties, meant risking violent, unconstitutional police raids on gay bars and clubs) and gave many neo-burlesque pioneers a place to perform in the 1990s.
2. Both the GLBT population and women live in awareness that sexism, bigotry, and even violence are constants–that discrimination and crimes against us based on who we are and what is between our legs happen every day all over the country. Things have gotten better over the past thirty years, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
3. Burlesque is about human sexuality: celebrating it, playing with it, and breaking down the fear, ignorance, repression, and violence that so often accompany it. Like drag performers, we challenge sexual taboos on-stage.
The GLBT fight is our fight. Please join us tomorrow.

So: Yesterday morning, Keri King, founder and director of Providence burlesque troupe the Danger Danger Birds, awoke to discover that someone had written “BellaMinx” in pink lipstick on the front and back windshields of her car.
No, it wasn’t us. We don’t deface public or private property, we don’t wish the Danger Danger Birds any harm, and we wholeheartedly condemn that sort of petty, juvenile nonsense.
One of the reasons we enjoy performing burlesque is the sense of fun and playfulness. We try to make every performance a space in which people can feel comfortable and forget their troubles. Acts of vandalism such as the one perpetrated on Keri’s car directly contradict everything we work for and believe in.
In closing, whoever did this (and if anyone knows who did this, you can avoid your share of the guilt by letting one of us know), do all of the hard-working ladies in the Danger Danger Birds and BellaMinx Burly-Q a huge favor: contact Keri King, ‘fess up, and apologize. She is understandably freaked out by this–her home was violated and vandalized and her burlesque troupe was grossly insulted. Buy yourself some time out of Purgatory and do the right thing.
